Lights Out?
- Stay away from downed power lines and broken utility poles. Please note the location and call Covington Electric System immediately at (901) 476-7104. Even lines that look harmless can be dangerous.
- If your power is out, check with your neighbor. If they still have electricity, check your fuses or breakers. If that doesn’t solve the problem, give us a call.
- Once you’ve called us, there’s no need to keep calling; your request will be handled as soon as possible. However, if your power is still out once your neighbor’s has been returned to service, you should call again.
- When service is restored, overloaded lines could cause another outage. You can help prevent this by turning off your heating and cooling equipment and other appliances during the outage.
- Don’t keep checking the refrigerator and freezer. Food will keep much longer if the doors are left shut.
- Prepare a “lights out” kit: keep a flashlight, spare fuses, and a battery-powered radio handy. Know where your electric service panel for your home is located and how to reset circuit breakers or replace blown fuses and let your family know where the kit is and what to do if you are not at home.
Power Lines Down?
Downed power lines are a serious emergency and should be reported immediately by calling Covington Electric System at 901-476-7104.
Never, under any circumstances, go near a downed power line or anything that is in contact with the line. It is possible that the line could be energized, and there is absolutely no way for you to tell the difference. Remember, too, the line can become energized at any time.
If you are in a vehicle that hits a pole and wires fall on your vehicle, stay inside and ask someone to call 911 for fire and rescue first, then call Covington Electric System for assistance. Unless your life is threatened by severe injury or fire, you should remain in your vehicle until a CES representative tells you it is safe to leave. If you must leave, however, jump completely clear of the vehicle, never touching the vehicle and the ground at the same time. Land with your feet together and be careful to maintain your balance.
